Trump’s outright attacks on America’s democratic institutions have rapidly accelerated over the past week. In an attempt to stifle investigation into his ties with Russia, Trump fired James Comey on May 9th, who was spearheading the FBI investigation into his ties with the Russian state.
Now, immediately after shutting down the main check against his attack on American democracy, Trump has given highly confidential and secret intelligence to the Russians during his meeting with their ambassador, Sergey Kislyak. “This is code-word information,” said a U.S. official familiar with the matter, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by American spy agencies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”
The information was so top secret that we had not shared any of it with our allies, it was strictly American-only intelligence. The only reason we had this information was because a key ally on the ground in Syria discovered the intel through it’s espionage operations on the Islamic State, and they shared the information with the USA on the grounds that the intelligence would be kept top secret.
Trump even went as far as to tell Ambassador Kislyak the city in which they discovered the information, a city controlled by ISIS. Officials said the capability could be useful for other purposes, possibly providing intelligence on Russia’s presence in Syria. Moscow would be keenly interested in identifying that source and perhaps disrupting it.
Trump’s plan for America follows a fairly simple and standard pathway- erode or eliminate the American institutions that stop his despotic goals (Firing Comey in an attempt to stop the FBI investigation, convincing Congressional Republicans to stall the Congressional investigation), pushing legislation to enrich the wealthiest members of society at the expense of everyone else (Trumpcare, massive tax cuts), and deliver his payment to the powers that helped elect him (Russians).
The day Americans wake up and realize Trump’s determined march towards authoritarianism is the day America can finally return to a functioning democracy.
